I think at some point this weekend, the problematicness of this place and the problematicness of the other place reached parity, and so here we go: tech.lgbt/@davidjamesweir Going to try this on for a while and see what happens.

After solving the Guardian Quiptic clue [Fancy item lost close to store is evergreen at Christmas (9)]… … I spent way too long looking at different subspecies of European mistletoe, including the weird ones that parasitise conifers 😅 (photo: commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viscum_album_subsp_abietis_300314.jpg)

If I go anywhere, it won't be Mastodon. I lived through my 'just go somewhere else/roll your own if you don't like it' phase as a teen on IRC and tinkering with open source. Nowadays I want to engage with a wide range of people & make interesting connections without gatekeeping.

My high school computing teachers were outstanding; I was all set to do computer science at university ...until a new (to our school at least) teacher, Ms. Vass, came along and made me realise physics was actually fun and physicists could be friendly, kind people. jnoronhahostler/1564644531068436484

It was fun to join DCHooper91 on their stream! You can still watch on YouTube below, if you're so inclined... (and congratulations to them on nearly seven years of streams! 🎉) DCHooper91/1561397886595866624

This is tonight! Still no idea what I’ll say but I will try to make sense. 😅 20.00 suomen aikaa 18.00 British summer time and somewhere in between for (most of) the rest of Europe… DCHooper91/1560203453913337857

Even in Norway, social class and parents' backgrounds affect access to higher education. Would be interesting to see how the picture is in Finland; I suspect it is fairly similar. kifinfo/1559844266179891201

Come on, royalsociety, it's 2022 – give us more options than this 🙄 I definitely would 'prefer' to say...

One of the most frustrating things in academia is doing service work and then not getting credit for it. Not 'your name in lights' credit, just your name on the list of contributors. I'm so fortunate to be in a position to kick up a fuss about such things nowadays...

I don’t dismiss rankings out of hand, but when I see one, I always wonder what the motivations are and who stands to benefit from it. And much of the time, I doubt anyone really does. It’s meaningless competition. James_S_Murphy/1338638253856071681

Nice to hear markstephen60 interviewing Susan McCallum on Out of Doors today about Scottish blueberry crop research… not my back garden but picked a litre of blaeberries today in the woods at the back of my flat. Now picked over and in the freezer to liven up winter breakfasts!

Is there a service out there like ZENODO_ORG but specifically for videos (seminars, visualisations, etc.) so that they can be streamed online? Our university has a video sharing site but media there expire after 3 years - not ideal for preventing link rot.

I need to renew my UK passport and they want a "full colour copy" of any other passports I have. Does anyone know why?

Spurious accuracy (3 decimal places?!) on bibliometrics are apparently a selling point for the companies that compile them. BerndPulverer/1542422562545737730

I see what you did there, jackhidary 😅 — but in all seriousness this looks like a very nice book. Will be scouring it for ideas before I teach Introduction to Quantum Physics again in the autumn.

Absolutely nothing is lost and lots is gained from hybrid. I’ve just been at a very successful hybrid workshop. I was glad I was there in person but had really good question and answer interactions with those online. In person only and those people would likely have dropped out. br__grace/1534936385139920896

Learning academic politics is like being an old school signaller (operating something like vaunut.org/kuva/23954) albeit without any training! You know you need to keep everyone safe and make sure things run smoothly but you have no idea what the levers do or if they even work.

Missed it at the time but this year is the 70th anniversary of the first paper about Monte Carlo algorithms. Here's a lovely article about Arianna Rosenbluth's germinal role in one of the central concepts of our field: aps.org/publications/apsnews/202203/history.cfm
