      The return journey was by train (and LNG ferry). It took a couple of days but frankly I am now deeply uncomfortable with the carbon emissions of flying for work.

        Sure, you could 'offset' your emissions, but as JohnMuirTrust point out here, that leads to companies buying up land to plant unsuitable trees, pricing local farmers and communities out of the market and diluting their say in how their land is used. johnmuirtrust.org/whats-new/news/1165-the-rise-of-green-lairds

          (notwithstanding the problems with 'offsetting' in the first place - when you fly, you're emitting greenhouse gases *right now*, not over the next few decades)

            So I am mostly done with in-person conferences, unless I can do some of the following: • combine several activities into one trip • get reasonable reassurances that a bona fide hybrid option is offered • stay for a longer time to maximise the benefit of travel • go by train
