Look at these captions: "Observation by Mrs. I. Roberts" "Observation by Miss M. Kurz" These people arguably discovered the charged pion (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pion#History) but weren't authors on the article (inspirehep.net/literature/21948). Were they physicists? Why weren't they co-authors?

According to fafnir.phyast.pitt.edu/particles/pion.html ("Discovery of the Pion", CERN Courier, June 1997), I[rene] Roberts was the wife of Max Roberts, the group technician at the time who later worked at CERN. I haven't found anything about Miss M. Kurz yet, though.
