  1. Reading a PhD thesis by Rachel Foot about 'hidden curriculum' in PhD studies (etd.ohiolink.edu/pg_10?::NO:10:P10_ETD_SUBID:151890#abstract-files), this struck me (p28). Competitiveness makes students give up what makes them unique, so that they can fit in. As Foot says, we faculty often "[act] to (re)produce inequality".

      This was great, too: basically, we should tell students how we decided what they will learn – and we should openly discuss cultural norms and expectations in academia.
