GravityWithHat I use Inspire and Google Scholar to regularly check who have cited papers that I find valuable (pretty much every time I go back to those papers). I listen to colleagues at coffee breaks or our Friday pizza lunch talks, and people discussing papers on our group Mattermost chat.

GravityWithHat I don't think there's any one answer. But there was a time (about when I stopped caring about new stuff on the arXiv) when it seemed every paper on gr-qc was on Hořava–Lifshitz gravity, and that's not a meaningful way to discover interesting stuff either.
