    teemu_roos I’d say a good letter presents the qualities of the applicant (in a way which doesn’t favour one gender over another), but at the end of the day, it’s best if the candidate is already known to the hirer. So it is very important to give students as ECRs networking opportunities.

      teemu_roos But reducing this to one number makes it seem like there’s a single “figure of merit” for every candidate out there, even though: - every letter writer will have their own way of doing the ranking - given the way the academic job market is, all the candidates are very good anyway
